Motor Vehicle/Boat/Vessel Sales Tax Calculator
Use this handy calculator to estimate the amount of sales tax you will pay when
you title and register your new vehicle or boat/vessel and outboard motor. This calculation is only an estimate, based on the
information you supply. Any additional information that you omit may result in additional
fees being owed.
For the best estimate, be sure to check the district options for your county. If there are no district options, then select either out of city limits or city.
Motor Vehicle Information
- Sales tax is a combination of 4.225% state tax, plus local sales tax, figured at the rate where you LIVE, not where you purchased
your vehicle.
- You pay sales tax on the sale price of the vehicle, LESS any trade-in or
rebate. Subtract these values, if any, from the price of the vehicle before you enter the price in the calculator.
- You have 30 days from the date of purchase to title and register the vehicle in your name.

- If you are titling and licensing your vehicle, that is considered two transactions.
- You may title-only your vehicle, and not obtain license plates (registration) at the same time.
- If the vehicle is a gift, and you have a completed General Affidavit (Form-768) stating the vehicle is a gift, no sales tax is due, although other fees may apply. Click here for additional information on gifting a vehicle.
Boat/Vessel and Outboard Motor Information
- Missouri sales tax is a combination of 4.225% state tax, plus local sales tax, calculated on the boat/vessel and outboard motor at:
- Missouri Residents – the rate where you live, not where you purchased the boat/vessel/outboard motor; or
- Missouri Non-Residents – the rate where the boat/vessel /outboard motor is housed, not where you purchased the boat/vessel/outboard motor.
- You pay sales tax on the sale price of the boat/vessel/outboard motor, LESS any trade-in or rebate. Subtract these values, if applicable, from the price of the boat/vessel/outboard motor before you enter the price in the calculator.
- If sales tax was paid to another state, you must submit proof of sales tax paid.
- No sales tax is due if the boat/vessel/outboard motor was registered and operated in another state for at least 90 days before titling and registering in Missouri.
- You have 60 days from the date of purchase to title your newly purchased boat/vessel/outboard motor in your name.
